Ahmet Çalik, international with Turkey, dies in a traffic accident at the age of 27

The soccer player lost control of his vehicle and ended up overturning on the way to Nigde, according to the Anadolu agency.

The Turkish international Ahmet Çalik, a former Galatasaray player, has died at the age of 27 in a traffic accident, his club, the Konyaspor of the Turkish Super League, confirmed on Tuesday.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our footballer Ahmet Calik, who has won the love of our fans and our city from the first day he arrived at Konyaspor. Our condolences to the family,” he announced on social media.

The accident took place around 6:00 GMT on a highway south of Ankara, and the player’s car, who was traveling alone, left the road, collided with the guardrail, and ended up overturned at the foot of a slope some distance from the road, the causes are not yet known. Pictures in local media showed the car seriously damaged on the side of the road.

“The funeral of our player Ahmet Çalik will be at the family cemetery at Elmadag Cemetery after the funeral prayer which will take place after the evening prayer at the Elmadag Sungur Mosque,” the club added.

Calik went from Galatasaray to Konyaspor in 2020. He was also international with Turkey, being called up for Euro 2016 and playing eight games, the last of them in 2017 against Moldova.

Both entities have also wanted to dedicate messages to the late player. “May Allah have mercy on the deceased; our condolences to his family, friends, and the football community,” said the Turkish federation, as did Galatasaray.
